Reflexiones de un profesor experto: Ramón Blokker (Inglés Primaria - Ávila)

El pasado 21 de marzo Mr. Blokker, profesor experto del CEIP Los Arevacos de Arévalo (Ávila) fue a visitar a su profesora observadora Mercedes Delgado Sánchez al CEIP Toros de Guisando del El Tiemblo (Ávila) y estas han sido sus impresiones:

Mercedes and all the teachers in the school were very welcoming and since I had worked in this school 6 years ago I also had the chance to catch up with some of my former colleagues.
Mercedes from the beginning followed the plan she had given to me and she started of by showing me some useful textbooks and resources like for instance a digital Microscope!!  All resources for Science. We also saw the new 3D printer that they are going to start using soon and she explained to me the use of THE APP “PLICKERS”.
After that we started the classes:

3B
Mercedes starts by Checking homework one by one to give points in Class Dojo. Next the date is asked and written on the board, together with the season. Students are excited to get a green point for saying the date correctly.
We go to pages 56 and 57 of the Natural Science book which is about farm animals. We review LIVING THINGS and to give correct answers the students get more Class dojo points. Mercedes uses a PowerPoint to classify LIVING THINGS and a worksheet to classify animals on what they eat, where they live, how they reproduce...
English is used mostly at all times except for certain translations of some vocabulary.
A slip with different columns to classify the animals is given out and they stick them in their notebooks and they are given 10 minutes to complete the slip with different animals and their characteristics of four animals that are explained in the text book, students have to read and complete the table.

The table is corrected on the board showing the table in a word document and completing it asking students randomly. Sometimes students ask where in the text was that information and Mercedes points where to find it.
To get students attention Mercedes says the sentence "eyes on me" and students reply "eyes on you"
Mercedes plays a game with the app "PLICKERS" to review some questions and students give the answer by turning a card that is scanned with Mercedes Phone and answers are given on the smart board.

3A
We start the class with a song: the "Mammals song". Using gestures while singing.

Next we watch a video about how we classify animals (Kent School video). Mercedes stops the video and explains while pointing on the smart board.
Mercedes now asks for examples of each group of animals (Mammals, amphibians...) and gives green points.
In this class we repeat the activity of the worksheet to classify animals according to their characteristics since this class is the same level as the previous one and they are learning the same Unit.
In this class the use of the dictionary is encouraged so that students acquire the habit to look for the words they don't understand.
1A
Mercedes starts with two songs, one about greetings and another about numbers.
PAYNE is the language assistant coming from Tennessee (USA) and helps Mercedes with the class.

We now watch a video / song about numbers on the smart board.
Next students do an interactive activity on the smart board with the help of Mercedes and the assistant where they had to match a letter of the alphabet with the photo of the right animal.
After completing one set of animals with the help of PAYNE the words are pronounced by the whole class.
Now there is an activity about the weather where students finish today's worksheet by drawing the weather symbols and now we count how many sunny days there were during the week, how many cloudy and so forth.

Next the language assistant PAYNE points to different animals on a big sheet and asks students if they are vertebrate or invertebrate.
Students at this point are handed out some sheets with animals. They get to work in pairs and they have to cut and paste the animals on the right column.

Mercedes explains to me that for every unit she has a picture dictionary to consolidate vocabulary.
